Marking criteria for extended essay ib

IB likes structure. Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be 1-2 pages double-spaced), research question/focus (i.e. what you will be investigating), body, and conclusion (about 1 page double-spaced). An essay that has unclear or poor organization will be graded poorly.

The discussion and evaluation are limited. Arguments are outlined but incomplete, descriptive or narrative. The structure of arguments is unclear, incoherent or hinders understanding. The final conclusion is limited and not consistent with the arguments or evidence. Any attempts to evaluate the research are superficial. The research is adequate.

The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. One component of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) core, the extended essay is mandatory for all students.

All extended essays are externally assessed by examiners appointed by the IB. They are marked on a scale from 0 to 36. The score a student receives relates to a band. The bands are: A – work of an excellent standard. B – work of a good standard. C –work of a satisfactory standard.
